Can I run my Vortex in Saltwater?

Of course, you can! Saltwater boating is one of the most enjoyable things you could ever do with your boat. If it’s a temporary thing, there is nothing special you need to do to prepare. Once you are done using the boat in saltwater, flush the exhaust ports out thoroughly, as described above. Attach flush hose to port, engine on, water on, water off, engine off, for two minutes. The Rotax engine in your Vortex has a closed-loop cooling system with anti-freeze, the saltwater will NOT go through your engine!

Rinse down the entire boat outside, and inside, engine included, with water, being careful not to spray water under the dash, or on sensitive electronics, but you can spray down the entire engine and bilge area, using gentle spray, do not use a pressure washer or intense spray.

When done, use a leaf blower to blow all water off the engine, and anything else that needs it, and allow it to fully dry.
If using your boat in Saltwater full time, it’s also recommended you coat all parts on the engine and jet drive that could possibly corrode with anti-corrosion spray, such as XPS, or CRC Marine Anti-Corrosion spray. You also should flush and rise as prescribed above and use an anti-salt product such as Salt-Away on a regular basis.

The boat trailer is a different story. If you have a steel trailer, it it’s not really recommended to use it in saltwater at all, because you cannot properly rinse inside the frame members, where the saltwater will inevitably reach. You really need an aluminum trailer for saltwater use, as a steel trailer will rapidly rust and decline. That said, if you have a body of freshwater nearby in which to dip it in, you can safely use a steel trailer in saltwater, just be sure to back it into the freshwater ASAP afterward, to rinse the salt off.

The author of this document has used his Vortex for four seasons, 100% saltwater use, and it looks almost brand new, due to taking care of it this way. Saltwater boating is amazing, don’t be afraid of it, it’s a little extra work, but worth it!
